WILLIAM AND MARY Mirror/Looking Glass with Rare Japanned Frame
Eastern Massachusetts to Boston, ca. 1730-1740. Pine, with original glass within molded frame and hand-planed applied crest. First, original dry crusty black paint with Japanned decoration, the decoration now heavily oxidized and patinated (note the photograph shot under ultra-violet that reveals the almost hidden Japanning). Also retains its original pit-sawn backboard, held with tiny T-head nails, and even the glue-block joining the crest to the top rail. Chamfered edges of frame back. Condition is untouched, as descended, save for a hairline at the base of one ear on the crest. Like a time capsule. About 17 1/2 inches tall. Provenance: Decades long New England collection; Peter Eaton.
