Scarce Tallow Skimmer
New England, ca. early 19th century. Finely made from worked tin with turned wood handle. The working end made by a tinsmith, featuring a pan to scoop in melted animal fat, the joining side with holes to filter tallow from the fat, the tallow then used to create candles. The tallow candle making process was very labor intensive, with tools like this tallow skimmer illustrating a bit the work. Overall length about 22 inches, the width at the filtering pan about 6 inches.
