Folk Art Paint Decorated Document Box
New England, ca, early 19th century. Probably pine, with cut-nail joinery. The lid decorated with grand homes and a steepled church on hillsides within a bordered panel, the front and sides also paneled enclosing trees, all set within a dark russet-brown ground with black border. With a terrific very dry surface owing to a crackled original over-varnish. Retains the lock (no key) evidence of use for important documents or money. May be second-hinges (leather hinges-inside) or perhaps hinges added for strength. Interior with later newspaper cuttings on original hand-decorated marbled wallpaper. About 13 inches wide x 8 1/2 deep x 5 tall. .
