Intricately Carved Busk Dated 1785. A Very Fine Example
Likely coastal Massachusetts. Appears to be mahogany. Carved by a patient, skilled artisan, likely a sailor for his sweetheart. She must have been thrilled to receive it. Descended in the family of Carole Hayward of East Bridgewater, MA, not having left the family until recently. Beautifully carved with DEEP crisp detail including a central heart, herring bone, two fans, and a pinwheel. Initialed "HC", probably the maker, yet possibly the lady for whom it was made. The back is engraved with the date 1785. Dry, nutty-brown patina. About 12 inches long x 2 1/4 wide x 3/16 thick. Superb condition.
