Diminutive Paint Decorated Spice Box.....SALE PENDING
Possibly Southern, ca. early 19th century. Hardwood. Original lid paint decoration of a flower with black within green petals, and subtle gold bellflowers between the petals. The incurved side-walls have swags above stylized lines, simular to what is seen on painted tinware. The lid fits tightly to the base via screw-thread. The tight fitting lid and small size suggests use to hold valuable spices. Note the deep slow lathe-turnings under base. Well made and substantial. About 3 inches maximum diameter x 2 tall. Exceptional structural condition (no cracks).
