Federal Silhouette Pair in Sensational Paint Decorated Frame.....SALE PENDING
Likely Allegany County (Alfred) New York State, ca 1820. Husband and wife hollow-cut from laid paper with black silk backgrounds. The husband dressed in high collar and notched lapel, fashionable of this period, she in bonnet and full lace collar. Graphite or ink embellishment to his hair, bordering the oval cutouts, and the swag decoration at the top (a desirable feature not often seen on silhouettes). The original frame is outstanding, with apple-green ground decorated with yellow, red, and black swags. The backboard is also original with acid-free paper placed between silhouettes and backboard. Pencil inscription on back is hard to interpret fully, yet seems to read, in part: 'Nathan _ _ _ Green his wife'. Also inscribed 'Harrison W. Green'. Both Nathan and Harrison were residents in Alfred, NY. Also inscribed Born May 10, 1785. Frame size about 8 5/8 x 8 3/8 inches. The profiles in terrific condition, the non-image area with water staining. Provenance: Private Connecticut collection.
