NEW ENGLAND BOX SIGNED AND DATED 1772

Likely Southeastern Massachusetts, dated 1772 and initialed "R+S".
Signed and dated boxes this early are scarce. Very well made with maple side wall, with pine or cedar top and bottom. Given the initials of the original owner(s), likely gifted, perhaps a wedding gift, and used as a little valuables box, not for "pantry". Carefully cut fingers, six in total (two under the lid) joined very precisely by tiny brads, neatly peened on the interior. Traces of white powder or paint down within the engraving. Side walls smooth showing little use. An accompanying note (not early) reads "Little Grandma Boley's box, Richard & Samuel? Foster". About 3 1/2 inch diameter x 1 7/8 tall.
Provenance includes private New England and Midwest collections.
