Miniature Wallpaper Box
Pennsylvania, ca. 1840. Block-printed wallpaper on pasteboard, hand-stitched seams. Rare design of black and white vine-foliate and flower patterns against a rich green ground. Owing to its early Pennsylvania origin, it has English-language newspaper lining the base, with German-language lining the lid, the former which appears to be from Montgomery County, Pa, just north of Philadelphia (Valley Forge area). Very small size of just 2 ¾ inches wide x 2 tall. Excellent condition. Early wallpaper boxes of this size, color, and condition are very hard to find.
