Patriotic Ornamental Painter 7-Color Trade Sign.....SOLD

America, probably Midwest to Northeast, ca. 1860-1880. About the time of the Civil War and the Centennial, this unique survivor of ornamental painter George Gentle is centered by the American flag and shield, clearly showcasing his ‘Northern’ patriotic sentiments. Small in size, perhaps originally over a doorway, this sign sits easily on a chest or mantle. Shows well even in low light given the light-colored ground. High character, in fact my kids all reacted spontaneously “that’s cool!”. Shows the scars from where it was originally nailed in place, and stains and patina from outdoor exposure. Dry surface. About 37 ¼ inches long x 3 7/8 tall x 1 ¼ thick. From a private collection.  An exciting piece, a "historical document" revealing the thoughts of this painter in that remarkable period.
