Painted Basket  

Probably New England, ca. early 19th century, perhaps back into the 18th century. Likely much earlier than most baskets we see.

Original dry dark sage green paint on what appears to be ash splint, with fixed ash handle. Not from one of the later known sophisticated basket-making traditions, this very early basket is quirky, with tight oval design and loose, non-uniform, weaving….and a bottom that extends below the sides, rather than “kicking up inside”.

The basket is elevated by its very appealing rich green color with strong patination, and honest wear from use, especially on the highly burnished handle. The unpainted interior has terrific rich dark patina. This basket shouts that it is early and special.

This rarity has survived with a split at the rim, and other imperfections. Given its great age and presence we can forgive those imperfections. Due to the extended bottom, it doesn’t want to sit fully square. About 4 ½ inches tall at the rim, add another 3 inches to the top of the handle. Oval rim is about 6 inches x 5
