Folk Art Hooked Rug

American, ca. late 19th century. Appears to be hooked from wool.

Organized into nine distinct geometric panels, each worked with its own pattern of stripes, steps, angles, or concentric squares. Strong black lines divide the individual compartments and form the outer border, bringing order to an otherwise varied and improvisational composition. The overall soft color palette is enlivened by selective passages of brighter colors. The maker’s frequent changes in color, direction, and pattern give the rug visual movement.

The wool surface retains just the right degree of soft, appropriate wear, enough to convey age and use without diminishing the strength of its design. Its compact size (about 24 inches square) suggests that it may have served as a table or chest rug. Visually engaging from a distance and richly textured at close range.
