Lidded Round Box    

Probably Northeast or Mid-Atlantic, early 19th century.

Turned from a hardwood that appears to be maple, retaining well-worn original paint. The wear suggests it was frequently accessed, may have held spices or tobacco. Very stoutly lathe-turned, with a domed lid, integral finial, and subtle projecting foot. The warm orange-red body is encircled by a broad yellow band bordered with dark lines. The lid has concentric scribed lines and painted rings.

Very solid despite hairlines on opposing sides of the body. Stands tall and straight. About 5 ½ inches tall and the same 5 ½ inches in diameter.
