Oval, Two-Fingered
Sage-Green Box  

Probably New England, ca. 1820.
Original sage-green paint on maple side-wall with pine top and bottom. Carved fingers joined by highly patinated copper nails, which were typically used in coastal New England as copper nails would not bleed in the salt-air like iron nails would.

Earlier than most boxes we see and a nice small size of just 5 3/8 inches long. Structurally excellent condition. Authentic paint-wear, and traces of a white powder, which the box likely held. From a New York State collection.
