Fine Silhouette with a
Splash of Blue
New England, likely New Hampshire or Massachusetts, ca. 1820, attributed to William Chamberlain.
Two skillfully “hollow-cut” areas from paper, with black lined (laid?) paper backing. Embellished with gauche and watercolor, including the striking blue tie, a feature sometimes also seen in profiles by the Puffy Sleeve Artist.
Presented in an especially appealing Spanish-brown painted molded pine frame that is likely original. About 4 ¾ inches x 3 5/8.
Excellent condition with expected paper toning. See Silhouettes in America, 1790-1840, Blume Rifken, for reference.
A very nice example…..I sold it twice previously, years ago. .
