“Sugar” Bowl

New England, ca. 1800-1850. Original paint of blue-green paint on what appears to be maple.

The design and execution of this bowl is exciting, with crisply rolled-over rim, decorative molding about the bulbous body, and a pronounced foot. The dramatic form elevated further by the rich paint. Very solid and weighty in hand.

Although generically called a sugar bowl, that use is uncertain. It could have had many uses over its lifetime. Excellent condition, sits flat and straight, inconsequential hairline at base, expected paint wear from period use, and stains on the interior.

About 3 ¾ inches tall x 5 7/8 diameter at rim x 4 inch diameter at base. Outstanding painted treen.
