RARE EARLY AMERICAN WOODEN LIDDED TANKARD
New England, ca. late 18th century.

Early American tankards of this caliber are amongst the rarest and most desirable forms of period woodenware.

Likely for ale. Staved pine in early pewter-gray paint. Each stave hand-planed, the tool marks readily visible. The carved handle fitted between staves, the top of the handled pinned to secure the carved lid.

About 9 inches to the top of the handle, broad 6 ¼ inch diameter base. Excellent structural condition with expected wear to paint.

Until recently in a private Midwest collection for 30+ years.
